Lady Hi Lady, Celtic sea salt is best because it hasn't been heated and contains a whole range of minerals that we need. I have never understood why so many raw recipe books contain maple syrup as an ingredient. It's not raw at all. There is a product on the market called Raw Agave Syrup that is both raw and excellent for health. It's low on the glycemic scale and doesn't raise blood sugar as sugar, honey and maple syrup and dates do. I hope this helps you. Guest guest
Thanks for the questions, Lady ,as these are 2 important aspects for raw foodists to embrace. These are 2 very valid questions; - > Why is regular table salt not recommended. - Table salt= Sodium Chloride. Sodium is a useful mineral but in excessive doses it leads to hypertension and because it is in balance with potassium and other minerals in the blood electrolyte, it will displace those minerals if it is in excess. Sea salt is more balanced containing other mineral salts besides Sodium salt. but it is still salt and still supurlative to your body's needs. Remember, if the bugs don't eat it, it's suspect as food. Having said that, I believe in supplementing liquid trace minerals in the diet adding about 20 drops daily to juices and/or soups. The trace minerals [injested with food] provide what is missing in much of our food simply because these minerals are non-existant or in short supply in the soil where our food is grown. A 15$ bottle of liquid trace minerals should last a year. I know many raw foodists object to this supplemantation but my arguement is: " OK! Use the minerals in your fertilizing water and grow your own, but if you can't, supplement " . - > Also, why is maple syrup best to use as a sweetner? - Maple syrup requires 1/4 the quantity to give the sweetening effect of sugar thereby lowering the calories and demands upon the pancreas. Also it contains some essential minerals and is lower on the glycemic index than sugar or honey, BUT yes, it is cooked, and refined {If you must use sweeteners it's the best of a Bad Bunch where Stevia is the good one in the bunch}. But use MS very sparingly because it is still conentrated carbohydrate. Would you rather be run over by a Buick or just a motorcycle? Lady, before you even consider adding sweeteners to anything I suggest reading this 4 page article. http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/14/insulin.htm rusty - " Lili " <ladyschaumburg <rawfood > Wednesday, November 05, 2003 8:33 PM [Raw Food] Salt Alternatives and Maple Syrup? > Why is regular table salt not recommended and what are alternatives > I can use? Hi Judy, thanks for all your help, can the raw agave syrup and celtic sea salt be purchased at regular stores or only health food stores? Also, is the celtic sea salt the same consistency as regular table salt? Does it blend well? Lili
