Guest guest
The difficulty with legislating *animal rights* is that you have to look forward to what would happen should any law be carried to its ultimate logical extreme. And, unfortunately, this extreme interpretation of the law happens daily -- not just in the USA, but worldwide. A good example might be our interpretation of the law as it applies to the lack of rights for minors. We do not recognize children as full citizens. Consequently, we impose restrictions upon them and invade their privacy in a manner that would be illegal and considered immoral if it was done to adults. They are not allowed to take legal medication; they can be hauled off to jail on virtually any assumption; they are severely restricted as far as filing suit. At the other extreme, you get various state child protective services intervening in the caretaking of a child inappropriately. So, this in mind, as the status of animals is changed we need to take care that we do not create a situation where it is legal for animals to roam freely or for anyone who identifies themselves as an friendly party to, carte blanche, intervene in the relationship between an animal and the animal's caretaker. Animals, like children, need to be 'cared for' intelligently with their best interests in mind -- not the caretakers. I have thought that we need legislation which gives a " pet " family member status. It seems like a good place to start. BTW, IMHO, a " family " is 2 or more individuals who establish a pattern of living together and regularly represent themselves as a " family " -- sort of like the definition of a married couple in Texas: tell a few people you're married and you are.
