Guest guest
Thanks Peter, I too usually wait until I feel hungry and then just eat fruit in the morning. So I don't understand why these other people are so aftraid that they will slow down their metabolism if they don't eat for 12 hours. I was just curious as to when the metabolism would slow down to 'starvation mode' (the words they use) if one did not eat. Perhaps I should research in some fasting books. ~ Annette
Guest guest
Annette, Having been on a long water fast I understand those who have never been a day without food. Humans have had long fasts imposed upon them by the seasons for many thousands of years. There is a natural fear of starvation built in to our psyche; building body fat to last through the winter. The truth is that we are well adapted to handle both long and short periods without food if needs must. I think " starvation mode " sets in when the fat is all gone and the body burns muscle to keep going. Given the way the human body stores fat, that would probably take more than a few days and for most of us weeks and when it comes to eating breakfast, I doubt that you have the remotest possibility of reaching starvation mode before hunger sets in. Now I speculate that there are doctors who might attest that there are a significant number of people who should not attempt fasts and that for them to risk missing a single meal could have dire consequences even though it may be better for many to miss meals from time to time and for others even more often. Eating after hunger is certainly the best.
