How I open Thai coconuts

Hi!

I have a problem posting to the list, but I relate to your problem. It took

me months of trying different methods from different advice before I came

up with a way that I find wonderfully easy.

It does require obtaining a rubber mallet, but they are cheap -- I think

mine was $3 or so -- and a heavy duty (read large) butcher knife or

cleaver. I just set the coconut on my counter or cutting board, place the

knife somewhere near the middle of the side of the coconut enough to steady

the coconut in one spot and then hit the knife repeatedly with the mallet

until it goes about 1/3 through the coconut; then lift the knife (the

coconut will of course lift with it) and tilt it over a nearby bowl and

pour out the coconut water. Then return the coconut and knife, still

intact, back to the counter or board and continue hitting the knife with

the mallet until it has gone at least most of the way through the coconut.

Then it is very easy to pull the remaining part of the coconut apart with

the bare hands.

I just love this method -- easy, easy, easy! I like to eat one Thai coconut

every day, and do not at all dread opening it. It's even kind of

fun! Before I had a mallet I used a hammer, but that was making marks on

my knife and so I got the mallet. ;)

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Michele

P.S. Feel free to copy and paste my message to you onto the list if you like.
