Guest guest
well, here goes nothing. I will definitely be on the outside looking in after the group reads this email but I have a few things to say. If you are looking for something politically correct look elsewhere. There isn't enough information in Ms. Gruben's e-mail to know the exact reason she was deported, or even what document she was traveling with. If you don't know immigration law you can't say whether her deportation was justified. Simple. I don't now what kind of verbal abuse was heaped on her or what not, but being fingerprinted is standard procedure for someone being deported. Even LEGAL immigrants have to be fingerprinted! Nothing demeaning about the process itself, its a legal requirement and a valid procedure used to document foreigner visiting the United States. As far as the comment that her luggage was " raped " , I feel that is an insult to every woman (and man, for that matter) who has actually been sexually assualted. Its a matter of course for luggage to be searched, inside and out, anytime you are detained for an immigration or customs violation, or SUSPECTED violation. The chemical that was rubbed on everything is likely for the purpose of detecting explosives. You have to remember, nobody there knows Ms. Gruben from the proverbial Eve. Just because she is a popular person to the raw movement doesn't mean anything to them. And it shouldn't. People forget that visitors to the United State have to prove they have the right to enter, not the other way around. The hyerbole in the e-mail was annoying. Terrible treatment? Did they shake a coke bottle and stick it up her nose? How about slapping her around with a rubber hose? Detain her for days in a cell without ANY outside contact? I'm certain nobody laid a hand on her outside of holding her hand to take fingerprints. Talk about immigrants? How about those who are raped and beaten (literally) trying to get to the United States from places like Guatemala and Honduras? That doesn't happen to them in the US - it happens in Mexico, on the river, sometimes by bandits sometimes by Mexican officers. How about being deported and going back to a stinking hut in the middle of some colonia in the middle of nowhere to eat beans and tortillas (yes, COOKED) with nary a piece of fruit in sight? And to the one who wrote that this is all because of some kind conspiracy by the meat board and the industrial complex?? COME ON PEOPLE, GET REAL! I sincerely hope that Ms. Gruben obtains some kind of waiver and is eventually allowed to return to the US legally. From everything I've read concerning her, she is a great asset to the raw foods movement and it would be a shame to prevent people on this side of the pond from ever hearing her speak. But the fact is, on the great scale of human injustice, this isn't. This is just one more person caught up in a legal, bureacratic morass, of which a part was surely of their own making. It only matters to most of you because its someone you know. People are detained and deported EVERY DAY. How many of you are out there protesting and complaining about Guanajuato Joe and Jane Chen's civil rights and opportunities? Please let me know if you. I might owe YOU an apology.
