Re: [Raw Food] Arlin, Patenaude, and Dr Graham

I have a protein deficiency.. I've been raw for 1.5 years.. I did Dr.

Grahams program for a while, but became extremely unbalanced with a

result

of candida and multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies. I also was

quite

gullible when it came to advice from many raw fooders about detox,

weight

loss, and the infamous " protein deficiencies almost never occur unless

you

don't eat anything " .. right.. yes, you CAN develop a protein deficiency

even eating raw fruits and vegetables... and it is very easy to not eat

enough calories when eating raw. I don't make that mistake anymore.. I

have

cured my candida and deficiencies..thank you gabriel cousens.. =) now

I'm

working on gaining weight (body fat) so I can begin menstruating again

so as

not to end up infertile!

Even raw food can be dangerous.. make sure you know what you're doing,

and

always listen to your instinct over other people's advice or

" knowledge " ..

[RH] Thank you for your post. Now you are the first person I've met who

has claimed a protein deficiency. I totally agree to listen to your

instinct over other people's advice or knowledge.

I would certainly apply that rule to following Dr. Graham or Dr.

Cousens. In the end you always have to do what works for you.

I have found many interesting things in my years of research with using

diet. I used to be an advocate of Dr. Cousens approach. In fact, I've

tried many approaches to doing the raw food diet. By trying all of these

diets and by seeing the results of many people on raw diets I've learned

one main thing.

It can be very difficult to determine cause and effect. The classic

example is the heavy detoxification many people go through if they

switch to 100% raw very quickly.

They start having bad results and they blame it on the raw foods. They

get very skinny or they start getting cavities or they feel very cold or

they lack energy or they get pimples and rashes or they get a very long

flu.

No matter what they have read before about detoxification, they just

don't believe it is happening to them. I know because these kinds of

things (though not all of the above) happened to me. I was forewarned

that these things would occur and that they would eventually stop. But I

never made it long enough to where these things would stop. So I stopped

eating 100% raw because although I felt good I had other results I

didn't like.

Now getting back to the protein deficiency issue. How exactly do you

know you were protein deficient? I find it hard to believe that you were

protein deficient unless you didn't eat a wide enough variety of raw

fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Let me type in something here out of " Raw Secrets, " on the issue of

protein.

" Some People Live on Very Small Amounts of Protein

During an expedition in the interior regions of New Guinea, the

researchers Hipsley and Clements of Sidney discovered an aboriginal

tribe living in the mountains of Mount Hagen whose diet consisted of

certain plants, 80% to 90% of their diet was sweet potatoes. The rest

was composed mostly of young shoots, sugar cane, green vegetables,

bananas, palm hearts and various nuts... The population, including the

children and teenagers, was obviously in very good health, while

accomplishing great physical work.

Professor H.A.P. Oomen... discovered that their daily consumption of

protein was 9.92 grams (due to the fact that sweet potatoes only contain

between 0.5 and 1.5% protein.) Meanwhile they eliminated in their fecal

matter around 15 times more protein than was ingested through their

diet, eating between 1.4 and 2 kilos of sweet potatoes a day. The

logical conclusion was that proteins were synthesized in the body

following an unknown process.

Albert Mosseri "

There are other cultures that live on about 20 grams of protein per day

and are very healthy. The whole culture eats that way. They don't

determine their blood type and then say that this person needs a high

protein diet.

I have taken all the tests that Dr. Cousens has in his books. The

problem with those tests is that depending on when I take them I get

completely different answers.

I used to answer for instance that I was having symptoms of

hypoglycemia. It's funny how I don't have those symptoms at all because

I eat a high fruit diet now. I used to think that was the cause of this

hypoglycemia.

This is only one example. Each time I look back at my previous answers I

have changed. Depending on what you think and how you act and what you

eat those answers can change very quickly.

It sounds to me that you loosened up too many internal toxins in your

body by a raw diet and then they weren't being eliminated fast enough.

This is a common problem at first.

Some people go to colonics. I think the best answer is vigorous exercise

and deep breathing exercises. Vigorous exercise and deep breathing are

the only way to pump your bodies garbage disposal system, the lymph

fluid. You have 4 times more lymph fluid than blood. It surrounds the

cells and its job is to move cellular waste out of your body.

One sign of danger could be a lack of regular bowel movements. You

should probably have on average between two to four bowel movements per

day. Sometimes you'll go in different cycles and may only have one on a

particular day. But other days you might have 4 or 5 bowel movements.

If raw foodists are having regular bowel movements and getting plenty of

exercise, rest, fresh air and sunshine then eventually s/he will get

past the initial detoxification periods.

The problem is that our bodies are full of incredibly acidic toxins from

years of poisoning. So what is throwing us off is really our previous

acts of eating and in taking of toxins in other ways and not the raw

foods.

Jackie, getting back to your Candida problem. Maybe you weren't

following Dr. Graham's program closely enough. You will definitely run

into a problem if you eat too much fruit along with too much fat. This

will certainly lead to Candida.

What people don't realize is that sugar from fruit can be digested very

quickly if there is very little fat in the bloodstream. I did a blood

sugar test on myself. The first reading was 106 then I ate 12 bananas. I

next checked it 1 hour and 10 minutes later. My blood sugar was now 95.

I was able to process it so quickly because I had very little fat in my

bloodstream.

But if I go and eat too much fat then my Candida will act up. If I eat

mono meals of fruit or well combined fruit meals, I have absolutely no

problem with Candida.

Sugar fuels every cell in the body. Our brains run on sugar. That is our

primary nutritional need. Sugar is the primary macronutrient or

caloronutrient in mother's milk. Even if we eat lots of fatty foods,

they has to be converted to sugar. So we can't escape sugar for it is

much more important for humans than protein or fat.

One of the main tenants of Dr. Graham's program is to make sure you eat

enough calories. So if one were to really follow his program s/he would

be eating a tremendous amount of sweet fruit to provide enough calories.

He teaches people that they have to learn to stretch their stomach when

eating raw foods because they are so full of water. Cooked foods are

dehydrated and pack much more caloric punch per bite than do raw fruits

and vegetables. So people transitioning to raw foods usually eat too few

calories because they aren't used to feeling so full.

Dr. Graham also advocates eating lots of vegetables. Dark leafy greens

are usually higher in mineral content. If you eat plenty of salads you

should take care of most of your nutrient needs. Also try to eat a

variety of foods.

Of course this doesn't explain someone I've heard of who eats only

grapes. She eats every kind and color of grape, but only grapes for the

last 11 years or so. Apparently, she is in excellent health. She sleeps

very little and she has so much energy that she refuses to ever sit in a

chair. I'm going to try to interview her soon to get the details. I know

of her because she was my friend's girlfriend.

I hope this posting was of help to some of you.
