Guest guest
Sometimes I read from newcomers who find the raw food diet expensive and hard to access. I have found that I my city Brussels, it has taken me some months to track down the sources of good raw food. At this moment I am struck by the cheapness of it. The main fruit market which is almost flooded with food from Africa. This week I bought 19 avocados for ˆ1 euro which is about a US dollar. I bough 7 small mellons for the same price and three dozen apricots for ˆ2. On Saturday the latter seemed too fresh to me but now they are tremendous. The avocados and mellons were very ripe but they keep for a week in the fridge at 6 degrees Centigrade. It is easy to see that I am buying fruit and vegetables in season and there isalways a tendency for the bottom to drop out of the market on items in season. The main supermarket here sells each of the above for a dollar or two for each item. Moreover it is easy to see that their produce has been ripened in the gas chambers in Antwerp, that the apples have been sprayed to increase shelf life. I just have a tame green grocer who sells fresh leafy green and I am fed for the week on the price of an hore d'oeuvres in any one of dozens of restaurants around here. At first I found I was spending a lot but with time I find I am eating a lot better by just eating fruit and vegetablesthat are in high season The Gardiner
