Guest guest
It’s funny how our conscious life can creep into our dreams at night. Often I find my life’s beliefs, values and thoughts being played out in my mind as I sleep.

Last night I dreamed of eating meat. I don’t remember the company, the event or even sitting down to the table. But I do remember vividly holding up the dangling piece of meat with my hand and taking a long look at it. It was a chunk of steak and I didn’t feel good about eating it.

It’s been more than two years since I ate meat. You might think I miss eating meat but I don’t. I have absolutely no desire to eat meat any more.

So what prompted my dream?

“Meat” is all over the news. First it was “Mad Cow” and now it’s “Hoof and Mouth”.

Yesterday, I watched a news show reporting from a Chicago meat processing plant as they discussed the possibility of the “Hoof and Mouth” epidemic coming to the US from Europe. The reporter was asking questions of the head butcher but behind him you could see other butchers working on a meat assembly line. At the beginning of the line you could see large recognizable parts of animals being tossed onto the conveyor belt. As the butchers each took their turn the carcass got smaller. Different parts were cut off and passed on while “useless” parts like the legs were tossed up into the air and onto the floor. It was absolutely discussing to watch. The head butcher was saying how they had no need to change the way they did things because of the epidemic. It was business as usual. They are ,you know, “USDA inspected”.

Now this report wasn’t about the disgusting meat packing industry but I hope the sight of that assembly line caught a few eyes besides mine. Pity we don’t see what happens to animals before they are packaged in nice plastic containers when they reach our supermarkets.

Recently I heard in another tv report that the hamburger people buy in one of the ubiquitous fast food chains does not come from just one animal as one might think. These fast food chains get their meat from large meat processing plants where the meat of a multitude of animals is combined together. That one hamburger might have the parts of 100’s of animals in it! What a disgusting thought. If just one of those animals is infected you’ve consumed it.

I never liked using the terms “good” and “bad karma” to describe an attribute of food but I think I’m starting to understand. The meat industry is a horrific creation of mankind and will be a contributor to its demise.

Sweet dreams.

-OrionsDad

Guest guest
That was a great post.

Here's a site that is truly disturbing since it takes you inside a slaughterhouse. I wish more meat eaters would look at things like this, hoping it would change their minds about eating animals.

http://www.meat.org/
