Raw Pineapples

I've been an avid enjoyer of fresh, raw

pineapples now for about the last year. When you look at

them, you can see the energy of the enzymes radiate.

I've also read they're one of the best sources for

live, potent enzymes.

I read something a while

back from a raw-foodist that troubled me slightly. He

raised the issue of the effect it has on your teeth.

Don't recall specifically if he was refering the the

acidicness, or the enzyme papain (sp)that has the effect of

meat tenderizer on your tongue if you eat too much.

But he suggested it could have somewhat of a

detrimental effect on your teeth, particulaly depending on if

you brushed your teeth immediately thereafter or

something.

I don't get too excited by this kind of thing. But

I would value input from anyone who may be familiar

with this, to let me know if the concern is real and

the best way to reduce undesired effects. I have no

interest in eliminating my pineapple habbit, but I'll take

reasonable steps to address this issue if its

valid.

Also, my wife thinks adding a little salt (don't

cringe, we at least use unrefined sea salt) to the

pineapple reduces the tongue tenderizing effect. I really

can't tell either way. Anyone know?

I remember reading a juicing book a few years

back that said pineapple is the only food that has

papain in it and papain is a beneficial

enzyme.

As far as teeth problems go, I think eating too much

of ANY type of fruit would have a detrimental

effect. I just got thru reading a website from a former

hard-core fruitarian and he said he too had teeth

problems.

Pineapple is good for us but don't overdo it. I've never

eaten enough of it to notice any tongue problems like

you mentioned. That sounds bizarre!

LadyBugg,

Funny enough, you can take a

whole fresh pineapple and juice it (get about a glass

and a half) and drink the whole thing and have no

problem with the " meat tenderizer " effect on you mouth I

mentioned. But eat the whole pieces raw, and on average I

get the raw mouth after consuming only about 1/8th or

maybe 1/6th of the pineapple. I've never consumed more

than 1/4 pineapple at one sitting because of this

annoying problem. Also, I never experienced it back in the

old days when I ate canned pineapple. Only with fresh

raw ones.

Well, I'll learn to live with it and

try to keep my consumption just below the tenderizer

point!
