SAD addiction

Hello all,

An interesting topic. From

bitter experience I am all too familar with this

phenomenon. Perhaps the symtoms of detox point to the

physiological addiction, but I am more interested in the mental

aspect. I'm sure Shortus is right about cultural

conditioning.

It is trite to say that from early history food has

assumed a significance beyond the nutritional. It was of

symbolic and ceremonial significance; the fatted calf, the

christmas turkey, the easter egg and so forth.

In

todays age of hype it is perhaps worse, our kids

associate Macdonalds with a treat. (For shortus and I as

kids it was probably a meat pie, or a fry

up).

Perhaps worse healthful food is commonly considered dull

and uninteresting. Comfort food is usually " forbiden

fruit " such as choclate or a burger, naughty but

nice.

Such mental associations are strong because they are

subliminal. The first step to overcoming them is to recognise

they exist.

Shortus has the right idea. Next

time I need a lift I'm going to sneak out with a

couple of mangos and have my wicked way with them. I

know its not good for you but.........

Hi, Every One!

Hardbottle - I loved your

comments on SAD addiction! Thanks, I had a real laugh over

it. Next time I get an uncontrollable craving for

forbidden food I'll grab some medjool dates! Your

suggestion was a great one!

-Barbara
