Perak government wants to protect bird sanctuary

IPOH: Perak has stopped all tin mining activities at Kampong Pisang

in Batu Gajah to protect the environment at the Kinta Nature Park

bird sanctuary.

Agriculture, Agro-based and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Mohd

Radzi Manan said the state Land and Mines Department had been

directed not to issue licences to mine the land.

& #147;The mining activities can have an adverse effect on the

natural habitat of the birds at the park, & #148; he told reporters

here yesterday.

On Jan 16, The Star reported that mining activities looked set to

begin near the bird park which had yet to be gazetted as a wildlife

sanctuary.

The park, known as Taman Alam, is said to have 129 bird species,

including 70 that are protected under the Wildlife Act 1972. A

heronry with over 2,000 birds is found on one of the many islands in

the park lakes.

Mohd Radzi said a proposal to gazette the park came after the

district land office had approved a mining company & #039;s application

to mine near the park area in 1998. However, a licence had not been

issued yet.

He had also directed the company to stop all activities, including

the construction of a tin dredge at the former mining pond at Kampung

Pisang until a full report on the impact to the park was carried out.

& #147;I will hand over the report to the Mentri Besar upon his

return from Mecca this Saturday.

& #147;We hope to bring this up at the next exco meeting, & #148; he said.
