(Article) Pink Dolphins

When the boat is gone they all reappear and play, despite their bleak future, in

the enormous waves that have developed.

The boat sails between Castle Peak power station and Chek Lap Kok airport. The

airport has swallowed up nine square kilometre of the Chinese White Dolphins'

habitat. These 'protected' mammals can be found in brackish water, exactly where

the Pearl River washes out to sea. Unfortunately this river takes the poisonous

wastewater along, that is dumped by the industry of South-China. The harmful

chemicals penetrate via the food chain through the smallest organisms into the

dolphins. Besides, the unpurified sewerage of Hong Kong ends up in the area. We

set course around the 'Brothers,' two islands that used to be seventy metres

high. They are flat, completely levelled. Because of the noise that was caused,

the dolphins avoid the islands nowadays. We sail further and I search the sea.

From all sites boats appear: according to the statistics about seventy per hour.

I cannot believe that still 250 dolphins live here.

Then I see something white on the horizon. But it is a piece of floating

polystyrene foam. " There is so much trash in the water, " says Janet Walker, who

has observed dolphins for years. " One of the dolphins got a ring around his neck

when he was young that broke only years later. Now he has a deep notch around

his neck and is called Ringo. " Then I see a vin, followed by a tail and six

diving dolphin heads emerge, snorting through their breathing hole on their

back. They are more pink than white. However, there is also a fully black little

dolphin that completely jumps out of the water. " They are born black and become

slowly pinker. But often the mother will lose her young. The chemicals that are

in fish, pile up in the body fat of the mother. When mother milk is made, which

exists of forty per cent of fat, the mother poisons the young with her milk, "

says Janet. She also tells that due to overfishing with too fine mazed nets not

enough food remains for the dolphins. " Weakened they are more susceptible to

diseases and they will find it harder to avoid a ship's screw propeller or a

fishing net. " A hydrofoil boat races towards the group. The heads dive. When the

boat is gone they all reappear and play, despite their bleak future, in the

enormous waves that have developed.
