Guest guest
Malaysia should lead in ending tiger killing - Malaysiakini webpage Praveen Bhargav, Bangalore Dec 1, 05 3:49pm The news about the prompt and decisive action taken by the government of Malaysia, and the Malaysian judicial system against the man responsible for the gruesome killing of a tiger has provided great hope to organisations across the world for the survival of this endangered big cat. Poaching wild animals is a heinous crime against mankind wherever it occurs. The tiger is a not only a symbol of the natural world, but its presence indicates the health of the habitat it is found in. Nature alone sustains and nurtures life on this planet. Wild habitats and ecosystems all over the world are being decimated, and the remaining areas are already under severe pressure. We must all work together to stop further destruction. It is in this context that the serious efforts of the Malaysian government will be much appreciated if it takes stringent action against this one criminal today. Your Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is correct in saying that: " We want to push for a higher sentence, which will include a jail term ... " for the guilty poacher. We too, appeal for the imposing of the maximum penalty of a five-year jail term for this crime which in turn will send out a strong message to all and set a good precedent. The future of mankind is at stake here. Every country has people like Ang Chun Tan. They cannot and should not be let off easy. Let Malaysia lead, the world will follow. -- The writer is writing on behalf of Wildlife First, a non-profit trust fund involved in preserving India's wildlife and wild landscapes.
