Be fair and apply strict rules on cat rearing as well

I AM dismayed by the current dog nuisance issue whereby some local

authorities have or are planning stricter rules on dog rearing.

I also wish to remind Low Kim Hean, the chairman of the pro-tem

Committee Against Nuisance of Neighbourhood Dogs for Peninsular

Malaysia, that if dogs are a nuisance to him, then cats are even

worse.

Low was quoted in your report, " Seeking to check dog nuisance " , (The

Star, Dec 1) saying his group would be making a trip to China to seek

advice on the impact of dogs on the environment and health.

The reason his group picked China was because most dog owners in

Malaysia are Chinese. I find his remark childish, insensitive and

provocative.

Is it fair for the authorities or anyone to demand stricter control

over dog rearing when cats continue to roam freely without the need

for a licence?

Is it fair for dog owners to seek their neighbour's permission to rear

dogs? What if you are not in good terms with your neighbour and your

neighbour rears a cat?

We should not adopt a double standard. Many people have also suffered

cat nuisance.

Talking about the din from barking dogs, has Low heard cats fight and

wail doe hours on end at night?

If the authorities want stricter control on dogs, then give the same

treatment to cats and other animals.

Demand that their owners put them on a leash and have a licence, too.

Owners of dogs and cats should also be civic-minded. I recently got a

puppy and I train it to defecate on the metal covering of the drain

outside my gate. When I take it for a walk, I will pick up its faeces

and throw it into the drain.

Kuala Lumpur.
