1.FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN. SECRETARY:

Dear PAWS Supporters,

People often wonder how we manage to run our 3charitable organizations along

with working full time at our respective jobs . In the absence of any other

animal welfare group, Paws was born out of the dedication, hard work and

compassion of only four volunteers who started with a scratch and today have

grown to include 120 people who pitch in efforts , services and funds to run

this NGO for distressed animals. Despite obstacles and opposition, we continue

to serve the cause and can boast of two ambulances that run to assist distressed

animals and 40 volunteers actively working for us. Volunteers and our paid staff

carry out regular Inspections, raids & co-ordinate reaching help to distress

calls. In order to serve better, we need more volunteers for fundraising,

campaigns & roadside first aid. We request all those who are interested to

please get in touch with us at 09820161114 or E-mail us at

2.COW CASE ON SHIVA TEMPLE:

Here is the web copy of the news

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=8303 & CatID=1

On receiving information about the terrible condition of two sick cows attached

to the Monday 31st October 2005, PAWS received a call from local residents of

ShivTemple Trust Dombivli (East),PAWS representatives Vishal, Kishore & Nilesh

went to inspect and found a cowunable to srtand and with its uterus outside its

body due to premature delivery. Another cow was lying injured and paralyzed in

her own filth. Both were unattended. An inspection revealed that no drinking

water was available to the cows in the cow shed the entire floor of the shed

was dirty and damaged, the drainage system was not working and cow dung was

smeared all over the bodies of the cows who were tied to an uncomfortably short

leash. The lady manager Ms. Nirmala Thakkar was reluctant to take action towards

helping the suffering cows – they would have allowed the cows to die. After a

lot of protest and with help of BombaySPCA the cows were hospitalized and a

complaint was filed at Ram Nagar Police Station against the Trust who owns this

small shelter .

Please write a strong letter warning goshala trust regarding ill treatment of

cows on address given below or email your letter to us at

3. GET TOGETHER AT THANE SPCA ANIMAL HOSPITAL:

Our sister charity concern Thane SPCA started only seven months ago and is

already helping almost 600 animals .This is the first Animal Hospital started

by representatives of animal lovers from different cities of Thane District.

All the trustees, members and volunteers got together at the hospital on Diwali

eve (1st November) and celebrated by feeding and walking the animals and

cleaning their cages. ……………………………………………………………………………………..

4. RAJKAMAL CIRCUS INSPECTION:

PAWS team headed by Anuradha Ramaswamy along with volunteers Vishal, Sonali,

ShivPrasad, Monali, Prathmesh & Rinki went to check the condition, treatment &

maintenance of Animals used by Raj Kamal Circus in Kalyan which falls in our

area

This Circus which is originally registered in Kerala has already surrendered

wild animals like tigers, lions etc.

Currently the circus has 6 Elephants (2 Males & 4 Females), a 22year old Hippo

,5 Pomeranians Dogs, 5 Parrots (1 Macaw & 4 Cockatoo)and 5 Horses .

PAWS team discovered that a horse’s leg was badly wounded due to which it could

not perform. Dr. Patil the Vet, treated the horse on the spot and also checked

all other animals. The Hippo was found to have been raised alone, without any

mate and was put in a transit tank where it could not even turn. PAWS objected

and demanded that a suitable pond be made for it

We will be visiting the circus regularly & keeping a check upon the animals!

5. KDMC STERLISATION ISSUE:

PAWS was happy to know that the ‘Municipal Corporation of Kalyan-Dombivli’

started its sterilization camp with Animal Planet. This project is funded by

our Municipal Corporation but their staff had no idea on catching dogs or

handling animals. PAWS team headed by Ms. Anuradha Ramaswamy visited and

inspected the pound along with 8 volunteers. A meeting at ThaneSPCA was called

to discuss the

following points :

# The Municipal Corporation will be asked to follow ABC Rules 2001. and PAWS &

Thane SPCA representatives on ABC Committee will be closely monitor the program.

# The post-operative care will be taken for 7 days for both male and female

dogs and not merely for 3 or 5 days.

# PAWS Ambulance will catch the stray dogs for sterilization every Saturday and

will release them the following Saturday . There will be no monitory transaction

with PAWS & Municipal Corporation. PAWS will do this work completely on

voluntary basis.

We hope that this will standardize the work and help control the population of

strays.

9. PARAKEETS RESCUED FROM BIRD MARKET:

Kudos to PAWS volunteer Shiv-Prasad Phadke for doing an excellent job of

keeping a close watch on Kalyan’s Bird Market. When he found that Indian

Parakeets are being illegally sold and kept in tiny cages, Shiv Prasad swung

into action and with the help of Kalyan Range Forest Office, rescued and

released the caged birds in the Titwala Social Forestry Area. The Bird seller

was arrested as the RFO filed an FIR against him. He will be prosecuted under

Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

12. SOME NOTABLE FILED CALLS:

##On the 5th of November our volunteer Prasad found an injured bullock with an

open wound which was being pecked by crows at Kalyan. Despite opposition from

the callous owner and residents the bullock was sent to Bombay SPCA ,

undergoing a journey of 80kms. The poor creature even battered the window due to

the stress of traveling but volunteer Vishal and driver Kishore successfully

reached the destination admitting it to the hospital.

## Two wounded donkeys that were roaming on streets of Thane were rescued by

PAWS Ambulance & hospitalized in Thane SPCA Hospital. The local residents called

several others who destroy them , we at PAWS conserve , rehabilitate and serve

animals as best as funds permit . We need money to run our ambulance, pay
