Guest guest
Wednesday November 30, 2005 - The Star Be more committed to preserving wildlife I REFER to your recent reports on the rescue of a tiger cub, the butchering of tigers, the accidental shooting of people during hunting trips and the countless other articles on conservation of wildlife and the environment. I live in the countryside of Pahang and I seriously think there is a lack of commitment on the part of the authorities in preserving our diminishing wildlife. Here it is very common to see gun-toting individuals riding atop their 4X4 vehicles, shining their floodlights looking for things to shoot. I remember reading about wild boars being a protected species but here, and I guess in most states, they are being hunted every weekend and even on weekdays. It is common to hear gunshots in the middle of the night as well as daytime. Hearing a shot and seeing birds drop down from the sky is a common sight. Bats, squirrels and other small animals are hunted daily. Everyone pretends that nothing is wrong when, in actual fact, most of our wildlife is being hunted to extinction. The people entrusted to protect wildlife are powerless to act as there are countless guns out there, issued to those who have no qualms about killing animals for the fun of it. I hope the authorities will do something before it is too late. Y.F.Y., Kuala Lumpur.
