It will be undertaken by the Sabah Wildlife Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Britain's Cardiff University, the Kinabatangan Orang Utan Conservation Project and various other groups. Dr Benoit Goosens of Cardiff University, said the research would target conservation measures for elephants in areas found unsuitable for the development of agriculture. " This is one strategy to reduce human-elephant conflicts, such as cases where elephants raid crops, " he said yesterday. Dr Goosens said the study on Sabah's pygmy elephant, funded by the Darwin Initiative, would identify areas where animals could roam freely. He said the teams would study the genetic make-up of elephants involved in raiding crops.
