Guest guest
Sunday November 20, 2005 - The Star MB: Pigeons likely poisoned BATU GAJAH: The pigeons found dead in the state lately may have been poisoned. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said he believed the killing of pigeons could have been going on for " quite some time " but the practice had only been reported recently because of the bird flu scare. The pigeons, he said, might have been poisoned by people who found their presence, especially in residential areas, a nuisance. " For whatever reasons, it is morally wrong to kill them, " he told reporters yesterday after attending a Hari Raya open house hosted by the Batu Gajah, Ipoh Timur, Ipoh Barat, Gopeng, Parit and Tambun Umno divisions. Tajol Rosli was commenting on the dead pigeons found in Bidor and Menglembu, which have created a stir among residents worried that the birds could have died of bird flu. In the latest incident in Menglembu on Thursday, more than 40 dead pigeons were found, some on the rooftop of a house in Taman Gamelan. The birds have tested negative for the H5N1 virus that caused the deadly flu. Tajol Rosli said people should not feed pigeons if they wanted to stop them from gathering around their premises. " Pigeons will naturally stop flocking to certain places if they can't find food there. " In Ipoh, Perak Urban and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn said people who wanted to rear pigeons at home must apply for a licence from the local authority. They should also not kill wild pigeons, he added.
