No one cares, says SPCA - Malay Mail

PAULINE ALMEIDA

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19:

--

Shame on you, Malaysians! Not a single individual or organisation has

come forward to help the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals (SPCA), despite The Malay Mail highlighting its plight last

Tuesday.

" No one has come forward with donations or pledges. We are still

waiting, " said SPCA animal inspector Sabrina Yeap yesterday.

On Tuesday, The Malay Mail front-paged SPCA's financial needs and its

uncertain future with property developers eyeing its land.

The site it occupies in Jalan Kerja Ayer Lama was leased to the

shelter by the Selangor Government. Now, it is under threat of being

sold to property developers.

An alternative plot for the animal shelter is being discussed, with

Putrajaya being the most likely location.

However, the 47-year-old SPCA is not in favour of relocating to

Putrajaya as it finds the current place strategic and easily

accessible to the public.

On the average, SPCA needs RM50,000 monthly, or more than RM500,000 a

year to run the shelter.

Yeap had said there was speculation that the current SPCA site,

measuring about a hectare (two acres), is slated for commercial

development.

SPCA is appealing to companies to help it pay for at least half of the

cost of the land. The SPCA would later raise funds for the balance.
