Twenty years have passed since Dian Fossey was murdered at Karisoke

Research Center, Rwanda, on 26 December 1985. Dian was a great friend

to IPPL (and a great pen-pal of mine).

The December special issue of IPPL News will focus on Dian's

outstanding work protecting the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Free

single copies of this issue are available. Please send your street

address. If you need more copies, e-mail info - we'd

appreciate hearing from you soon prior to printing of our mailing labels.

This special issue is loaded with wonderful photographs of Dian and

her mountain habitat. Her camp, Karisoke, was lodged between the

Karisimbi and Visoke volcanoes, hence the name. It was there that

Dian was killed in the service of her beloved gorillas.

The December issue contains tributes from two amazing people who

worked at Karisoke during Dian's early days (Colin Groves and Bob

Campbell) - they describe the rough terrain and how difficult it was

to habituate gorillas to human observers. Tributes also come from

people who worked at Karisoke later, including Evelyn Gallardo,

Juichi Yamagiwa, and Ian Redmond.

Other topics covered in the December issue:

Action Alert calling for US and international protests of the USDA's

Animal Welfare Act enforcement program

Action Alert about the performing animal show, which includes

orangutans, at the A'famosa Resort in Malaysia

Dianne Taylor-Snow's experiences in Asia teaching for a day in an

Indonesian school and visiting two IPPL-assisted primate rescue

centers (Highland Farm and Kalaweit)

IPPL's gibbon adoption program

Cameroon demands return of " Taiping four " gorillas

Please feel free to circulate this message to other animal protection lists.
