Guest guest
Dear Debashishda, Dr Wedderburn, Azam and AAPN colleagues, Interesting points have been raised for discussion. Whilst I agree with Debashishda that news items should be screened, (indeed that is the sole purpose of Dr Wedderburn moderating the list) I respectfully differ on his stance of everyone having access to all online items. Yes, everyone is connected to the net but specialised lists can and do indeed share news(this is also one of the principal aims of the AAPN listserve since it does not focus on protecting copyright or originality of news. This has been clearly outlined on the AAPN website as well as the introductory message). Regarding news being highly polarised and biased, may I just posit that ALL NEWS ITEMS ARE POLARISED AND BIASED since the media by its very nature determines content according to ownership and policy. There is no news media or indeed any organisation that is not biased and polarised. We all have our personal likes and dislikes and this is reflected in the way we write and journalists are no exception. Personally speaking, I have discussed this news issue with Dr Wedderburn on several occasions and have requested him to delete any posts I send(without any explanation) that are considered to be irrelevant to Asian animal welfare issues. I find all news items on this list very enlightening and informative and indeed would remain ignorant of a number of issues(posted as news items) since it is physically impossible to browse the net for everything(This refutes the argument that all news items are easily accessible). Dr Wedderburn has repeatedly higlighted the Asian focus which I believe should be maintained and there are indeed specialised lists on different topics so some discussions might be better suited for such lists(such as comprehensive discussions on bird flu). There is nothing in news items that would preclude original debate or discussion and we have had several on this list. In the course of my regular professional writing assignments, I receive Niagras of information from sources all over the world. If there is something irrelevant, the delete button is always near and I have never had any cause to construe any surplus information to signify blindness, dumbness or decadence on the part of either the sender or the receiver. Best wishes and kind regards, Yours cordially,
