Mizoram bans import of birds and pigs

AIZAWL, Nov 15 – Mizoram Government has imposed a ban on the import

of pigs and chickens from neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh in

view of the outbreak of bird flu in some countries, State Animal

Husbandry and Veterinary director Dr C Sangnghina said yesterday.

No sign of avian flu has been detected so far in the state and all

the samples sent to the Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal had

proved negative, Sangnghina said.

However, strict vigil was being maintained along the 722-km-long

international border with Myanmar and Bangladesh as state forest

department did not rule out stray cases of migratory birds passing

through the state.

" State Animal Disease Emergency Committee has been formed under

which district animal disease emergency committees were also formed

in all the eight districts as surveillance bodies, " he said.

The committees also conducted mass awareness programme among the

people in their respective districts, he added.

Dr C Zothankhuma of the state health department also said that

training had been imparted to medical officers and staff of

community health centres and primary health centres in all the

districts to ensure speedy submission of reports and treatment of

patients, in cases of infection. – PTI
