Guest guest
New Straits Times » Local Jumbos troubling Sabah KINABATANGAN, Nov 9: -- Wild elephants have been giving villagers in Abai sleepless nights over the past one year. The 300 villagers fear for their safety whenever some 40 elephants from surrounding jungles come to the area to forage for food. Kinabatangan Umno Youth chief Azman Mastar said the elephants, which often came at night, had destroyed crops and some houses. He said the animals were not easily frightened by shouts and noises made by villagers. Azman called on the National Parks and Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) to immediately find ways to deal with the problem. " Lives could be lost if nothing is done to stop the elephants, " he said. A Perhilitan department official said it was looking into ways to overcome the problem. These included relocating the elephants to areas far from villages in the area.
