Primates are genetically similar to humans and are used prior to clinical tests on humans when developing stem cell therapies for hard-to-cure diseases. The state-run Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology launched the National Primates Research Center in North Chungcheong Province with an investment of 7.8 billion won. Chang Kyu-tae, the head of the center, said the institute will save enormous amounts of money which would otherwise be spent by Korean scientists on overseas tests. " It costs 100 million won for overseas tests on one primate, " said Chang. The establishment of the center will also prevent the possible outflow of Korea's advanced stem cell technology, Chang said. The center currently breeds a total of 74 monkeys and plans to increase the number to 1,500 by 2010. It also has 50 monkeys which will be used for the stem cell research of a world-renowned stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk.
