The following article which appeared in yesterdays Sunday Telegraph was

accompanied by a photo.

Bangkok: Best known for its work in saving monkeys, Thailand's famous Wildlife

Rescue Centre has its share of carnivorous inhabitants.

Among the 200 abandoned wild animals is Meaw, who is seen receiving a wash from

centre director Edwin Wiek.

In South East Asia, tigers are increasingly unlikely to be found in the wild,

where they are prey for poachers.

And conservationists, including Mr Wiek, are also being stalked.

Late last year, he was forced into hiding following death threats to himself and

the murder of other wildlife workers.

In Thailand, huge tracts of forest are disappearing at an alarming rate,

destroying the habitat of many animals.

Wild animals are poached for meat, medicine and the illegal pet trade.

Animals captured in their infancy and sold as pets are often abandoned or

chained up when they reach maturity and become less controllable.

As well as these unwanted pets, other animals are confiscated from appalling

conditions, where they are sometimes drugged and abused and used for

entertainment for the tourist trade.
