Though the animals will be brought to the Hollong Range Office campus of Jaldapara soon, they will not be released in the South Khayerbari Tiger Rehabilitation Centre to be inaugurated on November 5. The 11 tigers occupying the cages in Hollong now, however, will be shifted to South Khayerbari as scheduled. These animals had been brought more than a month ago from Dankuni in Hooghly. Earlier, it was decided that 30 night cells would be constructed at the new centre, 15 for tigers and 15 for lions. But later, experts decided that the weather of the region will not suit the lions. As a result only 15 cells are being set up now. It is, however, not clear how the new batch of eight big cats can be kept in a temporary shelter for an indefinite period of time. P.T. Bhutia, the conservator of forests (wildlife) north, pleaded helplessness. “We have requested the Central Zoo Authority to give us more funds (Rs 55 lakh has already been sanctioned) so that more night cells can be constructed. Until that happens, we cannot shift these animals.”
