Guest guest
Rough report re Field Outreach Work of 25 villages compiled from Pradeep's emails, please scroll down for numbers of animals treated: Will be sending out a short report later with photos, please email me if interested in receiving it if you are not on the list already. Here is a map of Andra Pradesh which shows some of the areas mentioned: http://tinyurl.com/axngx Weintraub, U.S. Representative, Visakha SPCA www.VisakhaSPCA.org (more reports on the web site) -- 2 November - Tomorrow will be the first observation cum demonstration of mobile same day release ABC at Madhurwada (this is where those horrible dog electrocution photos still on our web site originally took place). Then we leave to Vizianagaram to meet Animal Husbandry people re the Foot and Mouth disease issue. Then preparing a proposal and budget for the Municipality here to adopt this programme and be a part of the budget. The latest HSI funding has paid for two additional people who have just arrived from Indonesia. The SriLanaka team leaves to Ahmedabad on Saturday leaving the Indonesia team here. They are scheduled to come back within two weeks and we are hoping for that. Meanwhile we will be working on developing the team and training them more enough and the reconstruction of shelter and now the bigger problem dealing with the outreach problems. For WSPA's donation we had a budget of 21 days and starting serious works from the 16th Oct we are over 17 days and we have used nearly 80% of the costs. But as far as outreach is concerned the situation is far worse than we thought and that was because of the continuous rains for three months now and continuing heavy rains even now. By the time we reached the Vizianagaram end and begun in the Srikakulam area the Foot and Mouth disease has already attacked the cattle, sheep and goats. Sensing the trouble Sherry Grant of HSI Asia and I and the Sri Lankan vet Dan had been with two teams today to assess the situation and plan more with the disease outbreak issue while attending to other medical attention like deworming and vaccinations. And today was a big day and horrible to observe in the Chintallpalle village the Foot and Mouth had killed 10 these last few days while three were dying in front of us. In this village there are 1500 sheep. We vaccinated them all four days ago but the immunity comes in after the 10th day. We vaccinated to those that are OK and not those that were infected. Now here we cannot kill these diseased ones as the owners will not do it and we are experienced in tackling this kind of disease so recommended for treatment. We now are doing the antibiotic injections , B complex, cleaning and dressing of the wound on the feet, and asking them to give the animal warm liquid diet. Can be cured with hard work. The antibiotic has to be longacting for four days to last so that we can come back to this area after attending to others. Somehow even then teams will not be enough to meet the demand and I may be pleading for more help as the whole of AP will be probably in this manner but will stick to the three districts that I asked for and carryon with others. If more teams or help comes in the form of vets, paravets (we have the labours) then more area coverage can be done quickly. Sherry is planning something on this but would like WSPA and others to know about the ground realities. She is also working on other reports about the work and about us. The nearly 26 villages that we covered were all lucky to have the vaccinations in time while now we trudge with more . More rains effect more animals as the conditions are all wet. 1 November 2005 Below are the data from 16.10.05 to 28.10.05 with very serious work though we did our bit on our own from the first day after the cyclone before we received anyone’s support. The below works is mostly from the WSPA donation after it was credited by the bank. It is to be noted that outbreak of foot and mouth disease is now prevalent at many villages that we are coming across. With all the three teams we are still unable to move fast forward due to the immense works at every village. We may now to necessities to go ahead with more equipped and expanded teams. The earlier we can get out there and with more teams the better. Rains are unabated. We had very heavy rains today morning and at the shelter from yesterday night. Andhra Pradesh is the worst affected and there is every need that flood rescue mission is launched in throughout the district. Looking at the situation and Sherry Grant's field trips, I will do an assessment of what is further needed and effectiveness of our work throughout the districts.
