While Diwali brings in joys for us, it really scares our animal friends. Crackers tied to tails of cattle , donkeys and dogs are acts of terrible cruelty. In fact, our celebrations are a nightmare for poor speechless animals. I recall a case in 1998 when a stray dog whose body was stringed with fire crackers and bombs died a cruel and painful death despite the efforts made by my friend Anamika and me to treat it. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, these acts are punishable offences. Do not let this happen in your area, try to avoid firecrackers. Report animal cruelty to the nearest SPCA or in Bombay do call me on my cell 9820161114 if you see any animal suffering. Celebrate Diwali peacefully, without noise and smoke .Have an animal friendly celebration. Remember Animals are parts of our society; they feel pain, hunger, thirst and fear much the same way as we do! Regards, Nilesh Bhanage PAWS …………………………………………………………………………………….. 2: MONKEY RESCUE: PAWS team spent a busy month attending to calls for rescuing monkeys who are abandoned, tease people and are used for begging . Between 3rd to the twenty fourth of October several monkeys were rescued by PAWS and handed over to Borivli National Park by Thane SPCA where they are being rehabilitated. Our volunteer Vishal rescued a small, cute black colored Bonnet Macaque which was kept in a toilet in a housing society in Dombivli west. PAWS team swung into action, rescuing the baby at 3.00am and hospitalizing him at the Thane SPCA Animal Hospital. On the24th another monkey abandoned by the Madari near the railway Station was skillfully rescued by Driver Kishore and brought to the Hospital. We hope that after rescuing 8 monkeys in 3 weeks, the Forest Department will take suitable action against the Madaris and stop illegal trafficking of these animals. …………………………………………………………………………… 3. SNAKE RESCUE: # When a senior volunteer Mrs. Vijaya Kanthria saw some people stoning a small snake, she immediately stopped the mob from doing this. She rescued the snake and handed it over to us. But the snake who was badly injured died within an hour. Yet we salute the spirit and efforts of Vijaya and hope all animal lovers show compassion to snakes as well. # PAWs members Sonali, ShivPrasad & Nilesh rescued a Checkered Kill Back Snake on the 9th October, and a Sand Boa which was found coiled up on a bike parked under a tree on the 12th October! Both the reptiles were handed over to Kalyan Range Forest Office and later released in the wild. …………………………………………………………………………………… 4. RAID ON SNAKE CHARMERS: PAWS Team including Nilesh, Vishal, ShivPrasad, Anahita, Rahul, Darshana, Siddhu, Sonali & Rasika has been patrolling Virar’s Jivdani Temple as some women have been found to beg there with snakes. PAWS had rescued a cobra last month from them. This time no snakes were found in this area but our team confiscated several peacock feathers which were being sold there. In normal course peacock feathers can be sold but since these looked new and fresh we suspected that the man involved in this business must have killed some of these fine National birds. We handed over the feathers to Borivli National Park Authorities who will have them destroyed. ………………………………………………………………………………………. 5. AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS & MEMBERS: As many young people aspire to join PAWS as volunteers, we meet and train them in different aspects of Animal Welfare. On 23rd October we organized a small get together of ten new volunteers with trustees and members at Treasurer Anuradha Ramaswamy’s residence. The video clippings of ‘Beauty Without Cruelty’ & ‘PETA’ s ‘Police Video’ were screened for the benefit of the participants. To join the PAWS team call us at 9820161114 or 9869376238 ………………………………………………………………………………………….. 6. ILLEGAL PIG SLAUGHTER: The PAWS team received information about the illegal slaughter of pigs by some unknown person. On investigating we found that a man indulged in unlicensed slaughtering of pigs openly. Our volunteers reached the site and rescued two cute, small piglets whose legs were tied up brutally and who were meant for slaughter. PAWS reported this person to the to police who were very co-operative. An FIR was filed against the culprit who was arrested and will be produced before the magistrate. The pigs were released.………………………………………………………………………………………… 7. SOME OF NOTABLE FIELD CALLS: # When PAWS volunteer Mrs. Alka Kulkarni found a dog fallen in a gutter and crying for help, she immediately co-coordinated with Dombivli’s Fire Brigade to help the dog. After a rescue operation of two hours, the dog was saved and taken to a vet. # PAWS also rescued a turtle that had been thrown from a high rise building. Its shell was damaged but with treatment , it is recuperating at our sister charity concern - the Thane SPCA Animal Hospital. …………………………………………………………………………………….. 8.
