Young elephants kept illegally shifted to Delhi zoo

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI):Two young elephants, being kept illegally here for use

in religious festivals and weddings, have been seized and shifted to Delhi zoo.

Acting on information from the Wildlife protection Society of India (WPSI), the

Department of Wildlife Preservation (Government of India) and the Delhi Wildlife

Department jointly raided two elephant owners in Yamuna Pushta area.

Both the owners were unable to produce satisfactory documents, a release from

Wildlife Protection Society of India said.

The two elephants - a six-year-old female calf and an 11-year-old male - were

seized on October 14 last and taken to the zoo the same day.

It said the owners were hiring the two for religious festivals and weddings.
