Guest guest
Poacher: I did not know tiger carcass was in my fridge! - The Malay Mail KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20: -- With poachers earning up to RM30,000 from illicit sale of endangered species, the RM7,000 fine imposed on a poacher is peanuts. While it is commendable that the Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department detained Ang Chun Tan, 22, and charged him in court, traffic South East Asia (a wildlife trade monitoring network) regional project coordinator Eugene Lee was disappointed with the punishment. " The fine of RM7,000 is much less than the maximum fine. It doesn't really send out the right message and the poachers will continue to target these species, " said Lee. He added that with the decreasing number of tigers in Peninsular Malaysia, poachers should be given the maximum fine or sentence. Lee thanked the public who tipped off the authority on the matter. " These people should be credited for their noble action. More people should be responsible and help the authority nab these poachers, " he added. The Malayan tiger, weighing 150kg and between five and six years old, was killed in a cruel manner. It was caught using a wire trap, then shot repeatedly on the left shoulder before being cut into four portions. In mitigation, Ang, a plastics factory worker, pleaded to the court for a lower fine and not to impose a custodial sentence as he claimed he had no knowledge of the carcass in his refrigerator.
