Guest guest
New Straits Times Treat them humanely G.C. Kuala Lumpur Oct 18 -- I WAS deeply concerned by the recent news of dogs being carelessly shot by the Taiping Municipal Council's dog-shooting team (NST, Sept 27, Sept 29 and Oct 1). The dogs (strays as well as unaccompanied licensed dogs) were made to suffer needlessly. The people watching also suffered. There are humane ways to subdue a dog. I am sure the public would agree that even aggressive animals should be given a humane death. I also found it extremely disturbing that no action was taken by the dog catchers to follow through with the mongrel they wounded on Sept 7, even when there were desperate calls to the council from concerned citizens. This type of negligence is unacceptable. Only when the plight of the dog was highlighted in the Press did it receive treatment — three weeks later, when the wounds on the leg had turned septic. Shooting is not a reasonable or reliable method of animal control. A dog can be caught with a leash and a catchpole and then put to sleep with a shot, not to the head, but with a needle. Dogs should not be used for target practice.
