Guest guest
Sunday October 16, 2005- The Star Department to look for signs of flu among the free-flying MUAR: The Wildlife Department will be doing some bird watching to check on signs of the avian flu. Its enforcers will monitor free-flying pigeons and other birds that are found aplenty in all towns. Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said these birds were not immune to the disease and any death spotted among them would have to be studied. " However, since free-flying birds, including pigeons and swifts, are under the jurisdiction of the Wildlife Department, the department will monitor them. " We are co-operating with the department and we want the public to also notify the relevant authorities if they spot any abnormal deaths among birds, " he told reporters after breaking fast with mosque officials at Panchor, near here, on Friday. Muhyiddin said the Government was concerned over the dangers posed by the bird flu and had taken measures to prevent it from spreading into the country. He said the bird flu disease had spread not only across Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand but also to China, Turkey and some European countries. He added that it was difficult to predict whether Malaysia's chicken farms could remain free of the bird flu as migratory birds could spread the disease. What Malaysia could do was to stop smuggling of birds, chickens and chicken products into the country and to monitor all chicken farms regularly. " We have asked for the enforcement authorities to beef up patrols along the northern border areas and take tough actions against smugglers. " Even fighting cocks are forbidden to be brought into the country from Thailand. "
