Timber from protected tree seized

Sulok Tawie <news

*KUCHING, SARAWAK*

------------------------------

*Forest rangers have seized about 10 tonnes of Red Meranti logs and sawn

timber which had been illegally harvested from the Samunsam Wildlife

Sanctuary in Lundu.*

<http://www.nst.com.my/Misc/Kiosk/eng2.htm> However, no one was arrested

during the two-day operation by Sarawak Forestry Corporation wildlife

rangers at the fringe of the wildlife sanctuary at Ulu Sungai Belinsah,

yesterday.

SFC's chief wildlife warden Wilfred Landong said, to avoid detection,

illegal loggers transported the logs from the sanctuary in Lundu, about

130km from here, in stages to Ulu Sungai Belinsah where the logs were sawn.

" However, our increased monitoring paid off. We have lodged a police report

and are tracking the culprits. We are confident of getting them soon.

" We are tightening our grip to protect Sarawak's biodiversity, " he said.

The Samunsam sanctuary is home to the Proboscis monkey and other species of

flora and fauna.

It was the first wildlife sanctuary in Sarawak, having been gazetted in

1979. It is located on the western tip of Sarawak, covering an area of

60.9sq km (6,090ha) of the Gunung Pueh Forest Reserve.

The reason for gazetting the area was to provide protection to a population

of Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) which are endemic to Borneo.
