Tour operator Che Ghani Che Md Noor said: " About five years ago, the fireflies could be seen in the millions. Now, they have been reduced to the thousands. " He claimed the increase in the number of tourists had attracted large numbers of unlicensed operators. " The sanctuary looked like a busy harbour because of these illegal boat operators. " Boats sometimes brush into each other during the peak seasons, " he told the New Straits Times. He said there were only two licensed tour boat operators. " Many illegal operators do not comply with the regulations. Instead of using battery-operated motors for their boats, they use outboard motors. " Tourist Chan Wai Loong, 45, from Johor, said the habitat should be protected to ensure the fireflies remained.
