Guest guest
Friday September 30, 2005 - The Star Free-range farming more risky I REFER to S.M. Mohammad Idris’ comment, Review farming methods to check flu (The Star, Sept 26). I share his concern about the recent avian influenza scare and its negative effects. However, I disagree with his statement that the most likely cause of the disease in recent years is modern intensive farming. Most outbreaks and human deaths were reported in backyard and free-range farming areas in the affected countries. Free-range farming creates a breach in bio-security with chickens exposed to carriers. Modern farming methods may be unnatural but not necessarily unhygienic. S. JAYASANKAR, Malacca.
