Migratory birds free of the flu by Raslan Baharom TAIPING: Tests conducted on migratory birds at the Kuala Gula bird sanctuary near here showed that none of them is infected with the bird flu virus. National Wildlife Department director of biological diversity and conservation division Siti Hawa Yatim said checks were conducted monthly. “We trapped some of the migratory birds and their blood samples were tested by the Veterinary Department. “The department has informed us that the tests were negative,” she said in a telephone interview from Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The Kuala Gula bird sanctuary, located in the northernmost part of the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, is home to some 160 species of birds, more than 40% of which are migratory species. Siti Hawa said the migratory birds started arriving in Kuala Gula last month on their way to the southern hemisphere. They are expected to fly back to the northern hemisphere in March. The birds included sand piper, plover, tern, gull and egrets, which could also be found around Pulau Ketam and the Kapar power station in Selangor, said Siti Hawa. _______________ Get your mobile ringtones, operator logos and picture messages from MSN Mobile http://msn.smsfactory.no/
