Guidelines issued to bird’s nest harvesters

TAIPING: The North Perak Bird’s Nest Harvesters and Merchants Association

has advised its members to stop using water tanks and ponds to counter the

threat of dengue fever.

Instead, it recommends the use of modern equipment like dehumidifiers to

lower the temperature and humidity in bird's nest enclosures.

This was one of the proposals outlined in the association’s “Guidelines for

Bird’s Nest Operators” distributed at its second AGM here on Friday night.

The guidelines are divided into three categories – “birdhouses”,

“housekeeping” and “bird sounds.”

Malaysian Bird’s Nest Merchants Association president Lim Theam Siew, who

welcomed the new measures, urged more bird’s nest breeders to join the

association.

“All states have set up a bird’s nest harvesters association, and those who

have yet to do so should join us so that we can work closely with the

Government which will soon come up with its own set of guidelines to boost

the industry,” he added.

Lim said a draft prepared by the National Wildlife Department and the Health

Department had been accepted in principle by the association.
