SECRETARY My Dear Friends, Welcome to another News letter from PAWS! Both our ambulances were on calls rescuing injured animals, treating stray animals with maggot-wounds and carrying food and medical equipments. Our ambulance that has been plying in the Thane district for five years has broken down and is too old even for repairs. We continue using it with difficulty till we get a new ambulance to replace it as we do not want our work to halt in its absence. PAWS appeals to all its well wishers to kindly help us to get one New / Old / Second hand Vehicle to use as rescue Vehicle for PAWS Thane. Yours for Animals, Nilesh Bhanage Hony. Gen. TIMES FOR ANIMALS FORUM: All core NGO’s of Mumbai & Thane got together at Times Foundations office in Mumbai to set-up a core team which contains representatives of PAWS, IDA, WSD, AIAWA, ALAS, PFA, BSPCA & Times Foundation. The main aims of this are- a)To collect the details of cases of Animal Cruelties b)To take collective steps to strengthen laws related to animal welfare c)To Set-up help line for distressed animals d)To create awareness among people through media The core team will have monthly meetings to follow up on these aims. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. PARYUSHAN FUND RAISING FESTIVAL: PAWS received a small donations on the Paryushan Festival observed by the Jain Community – in which they take special steps to donate money for helping animal causes. We appreciate & thank the following donors for their continuous support for Animal Welfare. ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION DRIVE IN DOMBIVLI PAWS carried out the monthly Anti-Rabies vaccination drive in Mrs. Kulkarni’s area in Dombivli on 11th September in which nearly 50 strays were vaccinated ..PAWS volunteers Sonali Bagde & Nilesh helped the vet and all are volunteers deserve an applause for their dedicated service. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 5. DISASTAR MANAGEMENT TRAINING: A two Days Training session organized by Times Foundation in Delhi on Disaster Management was attended by Nilesh Bhanage, Secretary - PAWS on 16 - 17th September in Delhi. Sponsored by Times Foundation for the PAWS secretary, it was a wonderful learning experience. Keeping in mind the recent deluge in Mumbai , the course will definitely help to strengthen the capabilities of rescue operation with new & developed techniques. We thank Ms. Angela of Times foundation for her assistance in this. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 6. RAID ON SNAKE CHARMER: In response to a call from PAWS Trustee Brinda Upadhyaya, our volunteers visited the Jiv-Dani temple in Virar where snake charmers exhibit captive snakes PAWS TEAM headed by Anuradha Ramaswamy swung into action and on 15th September 2005, along with hardcore volunteers like Sonali, Vishal, Jay, Mousumi, ShivPrasad & Kishore went for rescue. One Spectacle Cobra was rescued from the charmers which was treated and released by Nilesh & Shiv-Prasad in Titwala Forest Area in the presence of a Forest Officer from Kalyan. A watch is being kept on the snake charmers. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 7. VISIT TO AHF & GSPCA: PAWS Trustees Ms. Anuradha and Mr. Nilesh along with volunteer Vishal visited Animal Help Foundation in Ahmedabad on 22nd September and Gujrat SPCA between 23rd to 27th September. Thanks to AHF volunteer Soham & Mr. Sarfaraz for all their help. During the trip to Gujrat, PAWS Members accompanied by Gujrat SPCA Founder Snehal Bhatt and her colleague Raj went on a midnight reptile rescue mission handling Wild Cobras, Rock Pythons & Checkered Kill Backs.. They rescued a 4 – 5 foott Crocodile. It was heartening experience for Nilesh, Anuradha & Vishal to handle crocodiles. We thank Raj & Snehal for their support & training and wish them all the best. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. BEGGING MONKEYS RESCUED: PAWS Ambulance Driver Kishore and his friends rescued three hungry and thirsty monkeys who were used for begging by the madaris. With the help of the Wildlife dept the monkeys were shifted to Thane SPCA animal hospital in the PAWS Ambulance. They are currently resting- shortly the HIV & TB test will be carried out & further action will be taken on their Rehabilitation. Henceforth those monkeys will not be begging for their masters nor will they suffer starvation. (It is said that some of these monkeys, which are used for begging are connected with the Mumbai underworld. We really amazed to hear this. Must we assume then that our driver has taken ‘Panga’ with the underworld!!) Great Work Kishore! SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS: # PAWS Treasurer & Trustee Anuradha Ramaswamy responded to a call for an injured calf in Kalwa by sending Kishore for rescue. The Calf who suffered from a huge pus formation in her left thigh and could not walk was shifted to Thane SPCA Animal where . Dr. Suhas Rane, Dr. Ram,and Dr. Prakash are ensuring its recovery. The calf will be released back in Kalwa to join its mother once it is better. # PAWS Mumbai secretary Sunish, rescued 15 Muniya Birds from Bhandup station from an illegal seller. He released them back in shrub area & obtained the Certificate from Wildlife Dept. Borivli. # At the request of one of its volunteers fort sterilizing her farm dog at Karjat (Raigad District). PAWS organized with TMC ABC Center & sent the van all the way for Pick-up & Release almost 90kms. Away - it is a call of duty!! ............................................... 10. APPEAL FOR FUNDS: HELP US HELP THE NEEDY! We at PAWS are committed to help our four legged , furred, feathered and scaled friends but for this we are totally dependent on financial help from donors and generous well wishers. Helping distressed people is indeed a service to Humanity but serving dumb and helpless creatures is service to GOD. While there are several others who destroy them , we at PAWS conserve , rehabilitate and serve animals as best as funds permit . We need money to run our ambulance, pay salaries and buy food and medicine. We therefore appeal to you to kindly help us help the needy. You small contribution would make us difference!
