Thank You Lynette Shanley Indo-U.S. Indian primates workshop begins in Jodhpur Jodhpur (Rajasthan) September 13, 2005 11:14:14 AM IST The three-day " Indo-US workshop on Indian primates " began toady at Jodhpur. As many as 16 US and 45 Indian primate-scientists are attending this workshop to draw a national action plan on " Indian primates " . This action plan will be a part of the " Vision document 2025 " and the primate-scientists have already started drafting this document. " The primatology is a subject close to human history, culture and mythology. Before formulating this national action plan, we should give a thought about Indian mythology. Many scientists have not incorporated this into modern scientific researches. The habits of the primates are changing and they are inching closure to human territory. It can create an adverse situation in the entire living system while those primates carry many diseases. They should be kept away from the humans, " chief guest Professor. Ram Harsh Singh, vice chancellor of Rajasthan Ayurveda University, said. Professor Singh further said that a primatologist should discover all social and biological phenomenons: why these primates tend to migrate to other places. India should preserve these primates for carrying biological research. The division of International Conservation of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service supports a mega project called Indo-US Primate Project, which is now converted into Primate Research Centre to take up various research works on Indian primates, said David A. Ferguson, Director of Division of International Conservation of U.S Fish and Wildlife Service. Ferguson added the U.S government had supported India with many projects for the conservation of Indian wildlife and primates. India is very rich in wildlife and primates and it has one of the important bio-geographical spots of the world. India has sufficient infrastructure and best primate-scientists who could take up initiatives for the conservation of the Indian primates. Dr Arabinda Mitra, Executive Director of Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, New Delhi, said that Indo-US relationship was dominated by the science and technology collaboration. In many spheres, scientists of both countries have been working on collaborative programmes. Pointing out the conservation of Indian primates, he says that Indias primates are at the alarming stage and we should take this issue seriously. The Indo-Us Primate Project is one of the best projects initiated for the conservation of Indian primates. And we are trying to arrange more funds for such projects, said Dr. Marco S. Di Capua. Professor S.M. Mohnot, the chairman of Primate Research Centre, elaborately reviewed all the research works done on Indian primates and expressed his deep concern of conservation of Indian primates. Dr. Anthony Raylands, the deputy chairman of Conservation International informed that there were 70 genera and 350 species of primates have been identified world over. American and Indian scientists have been jointly assessing and evaluating the overall situation and the crisis of the Indian primates, and based on the findings, they will draw a national action policy.
