Guest guest
The Star-Sept 9th 2005 Slaughter mode decision soon PUTRAJAYA: The legality of thoracic sticking - a procedure to stab a slaughtered cow near the heart to make it die faster - will be discussed when the National Fatwa Council meets later this year. Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Mustafa Abdul Rahman said a decision on this had to be made so that the issue of importing halal meat from Australia - where the procedure is practised - could be resolved. At the moment, our MS 1500 halal standard does not have the procedure listed. Therefore, it needs to be looked into, he said here yesterday. Mustafa said the council would discuss whether thoracic sticking was permissible by syariah, as, according to religious books, the cattle should be left to die once slaughtered. He said the issue was among matters brought up by the syariah panel, chaired by Penang mufti Datuk Hassan Ahmed, when it met here yesterday. These matters will be brought to the National Fatwa Council, which would meet in November. He had visited abattoirs and met religious experts in Australia and New Zealand to study the procedure. Similar visits to the United States and India would be carried out to find out more about the procedure, Mustafa said. Several veterinary experts will be invited to give their views to the council to help it make a decision, he said. Mustafa said thoracic sticking had not been an issue previously, as it was not used as an additional procedure in slaughtering. On another matter, Mustafa said those attending the up- coming international Quran recital in Kuala Lumpur could win a trip to Mecca to perform the umrah or a holiday in China. These incentives, among other things, will be offered to the audience in Quran quizzes to mark the week-long event which starts at the Putra World Trade Centre on Sunday. The recital, which Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalul- lail will open, has drawn 68 participants from 40 countries. Pisol Yusob from Perlis will represent Malaysia in the men's category, and Faizah Md Hussin from Selangor in the women's category.
