Kerala HC asks Devaswom Boards to properly maintain elephants:

Kochi, Sep 7 : The Kerala High Court today directed the Travancore and Kochi

Devaswom Boards to take necessary steps as required under the Captive Elephants

(Management and Maintenance) rules, 2003 to protect the elephants under their

control.

A Division Bench comprising Justice R Bhaskaran and Justice J M James warned the

Devaswom Boards that inaction in this regard would be viewed seriously and the

Devaswom officers would be liable to answer for their lapses.

The court said there was an urgent necessity to take immediate steps to take

care of the pachyderms.

The court issued the directives while disposing of a petition filed by C N

Sukumaran Nair of Muvvattupuzha, an elephant lover and temple devotee.

He complained that the Devaswom Boards were not taking necessary measures to

protect and preserve the health of captive elephants under their control.

The petitioner also submitted that an elephant named Manikantan, offered by a

devotee of the Sri Vallbha temple, Thiruvalla, died due to lack of proper care

and attention. Another elephant by name Narayanan was cruelly treated at

Thripunithura in April last.
