SECRETARY: Salutations to the ‘never say die’ spirit of Mumbaikars who braved various troubles during the floods in Mumbai and strongly came forward to help people and animals. We at PAWS began by helping people before rescuing animals. Our flood relief work continued for several weeks and we learnt how to help during natural calamity. The deluge brought about a blessing in disguise - The ban on plastic is the first step to decongest drains which are death traps for animals and peoples. Hundreds of cows, bullocks etc choke to death on plastic bags every year. Vets at Bombay SPCA have surgically been removing kilos of plastic from the stomachs of cows. The ban will also reduce the problems of stray cattle and garbage clogging .Lets hope that the ban on plastic continues and is successful. Yours in Nature Nilesh Bhanage Gen. FLOOD RELIEF WORK DONE BY PAWS: (27 July – 15 August) We were called by the Rakhee Jain Group to help the flood affected animals in Kalyan – a busy suburb of Mumbai when we were helping people stuck-up in trains and knee deep water. The PAWS Team along with two relief vans, vets, first aid kits and fodder reached the affected areas and medicated and fed almost 600 animals . It was an uplifting experience for the young team. Volunteers Sonali Bagde, ShivPrasad Phadke, Vishal Kantharia, and Nilesh Bhanage deserve applause for their exemplary service in these tough times. Kudos to Dr. Kulkarni for tirelessly treating several sick animals. Twenty year old driver Kishore Savle collected leftover vegetables in heavy rains from the vegetable market to feed the starving cattle for several days. We are thankful to PETA India for medicines worth Rs.12,000/- for flood relief work. ALAS and Wildlife SOS, Delhi also helped us with medicines for which we are really grateful. Anuradha Sawhney of PETA, Kartick Satyanarayan of WildLife SOS, Bhavin Ghatani of ALAS, Rahool Sehgal of AHF & Fizzah Shah of PAWS stood by us through these tough times offering us unflinching support. We received concerned calls from Abodh Aras of WSD, Brinda Upadhyaya of PAWS, Goodicia Vaidya of PAWS, Supriya Bose, and Diana Singh Roy of BombaySPCA & Roy Jones of WSPA from London- all offering us help and wishing us well. We did not appeal to any at the time and worked in co-ordination with other NGOs. We are thankful to the following donors for their generous help toPAWS Ms. Romula D'silva, UAE Ms. Pramodini Chaubal, Mumbai Ms. Swapna Joshi, New Bombay Ms. Shabnam Sahni, Delhi Ms. Diana Singh Roy, Mumbai Mr. John Abraham, Mumbai (Actor & PAWS Patron) Wildlife SOS, Delhi Henceforth PAWS will work on all such calamities to help the animals. ..................................................... 3. NAG-PANCHMI FESTIVAL: PAWS team would like to share its achievement on the festival involving snakes. In 1998 almost 30 snakes (Mainly Cobras, Pythons, Rat Snakes & Red Sand Boas) would be rescued by PAWS from Mumbai on festivals of Nagpanchmi & Mahashivratri. Over 600 snake charmers would come to Mumbai on these days with snakes who were starved for several weeks prior to the festival. Kept in round baskets in filthy conditions they would die a slow and painful death. Our constant efforts along with those of other NGOs to spread awareness and conduct raids on charmers has stopped illegal trafficking of snakes & other reptiles. We are very happy to announce that this year no snakes were found by our ambulances during their patrol in Mumbai & Thane. ........................................................... 4. INDEPENDENCE DAY ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION CAMP: PAWS organized an Anti-Rabies vaccination camp in Volunteer. Poornima Balan’s colony at Kalyan where 53 stray dogs were vaccinated on 15th August. We thank local volunteers Philomina Jones, Anoop Gopalan, Alwin John, Balak Das & Seema Prabhu for helping Sonali Bagde and Bhartesh Shah in this effort. ........................................................ 5. GSPCA & PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE TRAINING PROGRAM: Gujrat SPCA founder & former member of AWBI ,Snehal Bhatt organized a Two Day Training program for a snake rescue group in Dahanu Dist. Thane. She invited PAWS secretary Nilesh Bhanage and member Vishal Kantharia to attend a lecture on animal welfare. Snehal Bhatt held training on Wildlife Protection Act & reptile rescue, while Nilesh held training sessions on issues like forming a Trust body, effective running of orgnisations, expanding memberships, maintaining paperwork and attending rescue calls.
