Guest guest
Hi Olaf, One change is the internet, where this information is much easier to disseminate and more people are aware, than they were 10 years ago. But the main concern for many is the notion that the animals would be a state " gift " from one country to another, in which case there may not be the professional protection an approved EEP transfer would imply. I'm still waiting for info from Shanghai about its facilities, and how, if at all, they've changed since 2002 when the last photos and reports I got were from. Bouleman, Billy and others won't be forgotten now-a-days, at least if we can keep the lines of communications open and help zoos exchange husbandry ideas/improvements, etc, to benefit the animals, which will ultimately benefit the zoos themselves. By helping gorillas as individuals, hopefully it will raise the bar for *all* animals in captivity and urge zoos to do more to improve their own situations, as well as actively participate in in-situ conservation efforts as well. Hello all, apart from all the discussion about the 1,2 European gorillas going to Shanghai Zoo and wether it is good or not, I would really like to know if male Bouleman is still at this very zoo. He was transferred to Shanghai Zoo in 1993 from Blijdorp Rotterdam (Wassenaar to be correct) and from then on lived at the zoo by himself. What is the plan for Bouleman if Shanghai Zoo has really built new accomodation? What is going to happen with this elderly but really nice male? Will they sent him somewhere to a Chinese province - like it happened to male Billy who came from Barcelona Zoo in 1996 and just dissapeared at some Chinese zoo. I hope the EEP will care a bit about these animals. Especially if they are still the property of European zoos. Why do the animal rights activists argue so much against the trasfer of Bokito and the two females if the same happened years ago and - as far as I know - the animal transferred those days (Bouleman) happened to live quite healthy ever since? I doubt they know that there are already gorillas from Europe at this zoo. Blijdorp proved to be very much responsible about their animals in foreign zoos in the past. For two young bull elephants which had been sent to inadequate housing in Spain they helped the park there to improve the situation by sending an expert down to support the people there. I am sure Blijdorp would never send gorillas to a bad place or bad facilities. Especially if - as in this case - on of the Rotterdam born gorillas (probabaly female Astra) will be among the animals to be sent there. For male Bokito from Berlin it is a unique chance to get a harem group and avoid the bachelor group life. The so called " animal lovers " in Berlin should shut up and better care about the horrible ape house at Berlin Zoo. I much more hope someone will care about Bouleman and Billy... best regards Olaf gorillakeepers schrieb am 31.08.05 22:22:46: PS. Meant to say gorillas from both Germany AND the Netherlands are going ... sorry for the confusion. j. - Jane T. R. If anyone out there cares to post a rough English translation, thanks in advance. My german ain't what it used to be, but the gist, I think, is ProWildlife opposes the transfer, based on Shanghai's long history of alleged animal abuse, etc. I have photos of the gorilla enclosure there in 2002, but have heard they have made changes, including a new chimp facility, ok'd by Jane Goodall ... Anyone out there know more about this? Thanks! Jane
