Guest guest
PS. Meant to say gorillas from both Germany AND the Netherlands are going ... sorry for the confusion. j. - Jane T. R. Dewar gorillakeepers ; Asian Animal Protection Wednesday, August 31, 2005 4:15 PM [gorillakeepers] gorillas as gifts? http://www.prowildlife.de/de/Presse/Archiv_2005/PM-Gorillas-China_2005/pm-gorill\ as-china_2005.html This is " auf Deutsch " - in German - but basically it refers to the move of some gorillas from German zoos to Shanghai in China as a " state gift " from the government of the Netherlands to China ...I've also heard it's a routine transfer from one EEP zoo to another and not a state gift. If anyone out there cares to post a rough English translation, thanks in advance. My german ain't what it used to be, but the gist, I think, is ProWildlife opposes the transfer, based on Shanghai's long history of alleged animal abuse, etc. I have photos of the gorilla enclosure there in 2002, but have heard they have made changes, including a new chimp facility, ok'd by Jane Goodall ... Anyone out there know more about this? Thanks! Jane
Guest guest
Vielen Dank, Herma!! ;-) - " hecal_2000 " <hecal_2000 " Jane T. R. Conservationists criticize dubious deal - the destination zoo Shanghai is criticized because of cruelty to animals Munich, 29 August 2005 - On Wednesday a long odyssey for German zoo gorillas is going to start, ending in the Shanghai zoo which is notorious for its cruelty to animals. Gorilla-boy Bokito (9) from the Berlin zoo will arrive on 31 August in the safari park Hodenhagen/Germany from where he will be sent to Rotterdam/Netherlands, together with gorilla-girl Quenta from the zoo Saarbruecken (Germany) and a Dutch animal. From there the gorillas will be transferred as an official " Netherlands state gift " to China - and to the zoo of Shanghai of all places. " Our photos from Shanghai document the abuse of animals for circus shows. This fate will now also hit the gorillas from Berlin and Saarbruecken " , criticizes Dr. Sandra Altherr of PRO WILDLIFE. The animal protection organization has called upon the zoos to refrain from handing the animals over to China. (They then give some examples of animal transfers which went wrong in the past and were prevented) There are no animal protection laws in China and the conditions in zoos are frequently catastrophic. Abuse of animals is normal which makes it even more disconcerting that the zoos of Berlin, Saarbruecken and Rotterdam entrust the Shanghai zoo now with the fate of the gorillas (...) PRO WILDLIFE calls these plans irresponsible (.) It is also absurd that, according to the stopover safari park Hodenhagen, gorillas brought up in Germany will be declared " Netherlands state gift " . PRO WILDLIFE found out that Rotterdam expects in in return rare animals that live only in China (.)............. Note: The Berlin zoo has often been critized because they allegedly wanted to get rid of older animals (chimps) in order to make room for young ones attracting more visitor interest. hope that helps Herma aapn , " Jane T.
