since weeks we struggle to keep Kandy a safe place for dogs to live... inspite

of a court-order in our favour, again and again the KMC tries to revert to

killing. Right now the Chief-Minister of the Central Province is trying to

mediate, if he fails and Dr.Jayasinghe follows up his threats with action, he

will probably be charged for contempt of court.

 

Last year, when he started to work against our Catch-Neuter-Return-programme and

planned to resume killing, we collected thousands of signatures from citizens of

Kandy within a few hours, he did not even look at them, the Governor of the

Central Province asked him to cooperate with us, he ignored it, the Government

Agent wrote him a letter on our behalf, he did not care at all, and now even the

authority of the courts is being ignored by him. Since we know the vested

intrests behind all this, we have only a very faint hope, that the mediation of

the Chief-Minister will work or that a flood of protesting e-mails may change

his mind. Anyhow we appreciate Kim's initiative and would be happy if others

join her. Please read her message and her mail to Dr.Jayasinghe below.

URGENT APPEAL TO SAVE THE STRAYS IN KANDY

In Kandy which is the centre of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, a successful mass

sterilisation and vaccination has been in place over the last three years. Over

5000 dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated by a group of dedicated people I

have met, the costs of which is funded mainly by foreign donations. This area

has been the only glimmer of hope in a country where animal welfare is non

existent and where thousands of strays are systematically gassed, electrocuted,

poisoned, and tortured by the locals. Buddhism offers no solace to the animals

there. Dr Jayasinghe, the Kandy Municipal Chief Veterinary Surgeon, is a corrupt

man who delights in killing animals. He wants to a return to the mass slaughters

and the horrors of the gas chambers. He wants to resume the killings after the

Buddhist festival later this month and has vowed to kill every stray in sight.

He now has the support of the Mayor of Kandy.

Dr Jayasinghe (nicknamed Dr Death) has done everything in his power to

undermine and destroy the people who are trying to use humane methods to control

the strays. It beggars belief the lengths this man has pursued to wreck the

programme and resume the killing sprees. Ironically many of the dogs he wants to

kill are sterilised and vaccinated.

The woman who is involved with the sterilisation programme in Kandy is now

desperate and feels time is running out. She has asked me to help, but I feel

only public protests will save these animals now. Protests from abroad always

carry more clout, as my letter in the Daily Mail proved last year.

We need to state that the eyes of the world are watching Sri Lanka, a Buddhist

society, yet, one of the most brutal places on earth for animals. The

sterilisation/vaccination campaign in Kandy is an example the rest of the

country should follow. If this example is removed, Sri Lanka will remain a bleak

and uncivilised place.

Interestingly the President of Sri Lanka's son is in his final year of

veterinary medicine in the UK at the present time. Unfortunately I do not have

her email address.

Dear Dr Jayasinghe

I am surprised that as a vet, a person who usually strives to save the life of

an animal and alleviate it's suffering and pain, that you delight in doing the

opposite. That is torturing, killing and causing such suffering to innocent

creatures, namely the stray dogs (our devoted friends and companions in the

western and civilised world).

I wonder how you can sleep at night. It is common knowledge that you are devoid

of compassion, but do you not have a conscience either?

Kandy is the centre of Buddhism in a country that is one of the most brutal

places on earth for animals. I have 2 strays, both with their tails hacked off

as testament to that. It is a country that systematically gasses, electrocutes

and poisons innocent dogs on mass scales. The sterilisation and vaccination

schemes in Kandy, which you have concentrated all your efforts to discredit and

destroy because you are a corrupt and deceitful man, offers the only hope to Sri

Lanka ever becoming a civilised country and respecting the teachings of Buddha.

Kandy is a showpiece and something Sri Lanka can be proud of. If you resume the

killing of the strays in Kandy, you will personally be held responsible, and you

name will be tarnished throughout the western world as well as Sri Lanka for

being a sadist who delights in killing the most loyal and devoted friend a man

will ever have. Many of the dogs you wish to kill are sterilised and vaccinated.

What is you argument for that? More lies I expect. You will be exposed as being

a liar and a corrupt and greedy man. Your career as Dr Death will be ended. Be

assured of this. You have the opportunity to relent, and I will be happy to meet

with you when I visit Sri Lanka in October. However, if the killing resumes,

your name will be known and I will be writing about your deeds in a national

newspaper in the UK. I have already circulated information about you to animal

lovers here and the High Commission in London will be contacted. Demonstrations

outside the Embassy will be arranged if the killing resumes in Kandy.

I am dismayed to hear that the Mayor of Kandy is also implicated in this bloody

business. He will also be exposed if the killing resumes. It is a shame he has

listened to your lies.

I advise you to stop the lies now and work as a vet to promote humane methods of

canine population control. That is your duty and ethics as a vet and a human

being. You are obviously not a Buddhist. It is the only effective, sensible,

workable and proven solution to rabies and animal welfare in Sri Lanka. The

world is watching Sri Lanka. The world is watching you.
