Development will only damage island’s beauty

B.K. GAN Kuala Lumpur

Aug 15

______

THE picture accompanying the letter " Take a positive view of marina for

island " (NST, Aug 4) showing a jetty at a marine park on Pulau Tioman is

exactly the type of structure that will destroy the natural beauty of the

island.

The marina is going to be an ecological disaster.

Is it that difficult to imagine that more inhabitants on an island the size

of 15,000 football fields will deplete the flora and fauna of the island?

Treated sewage also has to go somewhere. What is the point of building roads

across the island? Introducing motorised vehicles on the island will

definitely cause pollution — something contrary to ecotourism.

Can you imagine Pulau Tioman one day becoming another Pulau Pangkor?

The whole idea of getting away from it all is to do without modern

conveniences and such places should not be easily accessible.

In Hawaii, a marine park means there are no man-made structures or

inhabitants. Leave Tioman undeveloped.

Pump in water to save the fish

LT KOL ® RIZAL ABDULLAH, Taiping

Aug 15

______

IN this prolonged drought, Taiping’s lakes are drying up. Most of the lake

beds are already exposed.

I am concerned about the fish which are now confined to the little water

left, perhaps with no food.

The Taiping Municipal Council should pump water from the stream nearby to

prevent the lakes drying up completely.

If the council cannot afford water pumps to do the job, they should seek the

help of the army units here.

Mortuary and not a sanctuary

SUE INGLETON, Castlemaine Australia

Aug 15

______

THE state of affairs at the Taman Buaya crocodile enclosure at Pantai Cahaya

Bulan in Kelantan is inhumane and deplorable.

I visited this crocodile " sanctuary " , which should be renamed crocodile

mortuary, on Aug 10.

These animals are trapped, sometimes three together, inside small concrete

enclosures in shallow, stagnant water.

A huge crocodile was slumped in a puddle of green slime.

Crocodiles, as any child will tell you, live in water.

Just outside the compound is a huge river. All they need is a pump to get

the water in.

This is inhumanity to God’s creatures. Please do something. The shame is on

us.
