Guest guest Posted August 13, 2005 Report Share Posted August 13, 2005 Saturday August 13, 2005 _ The Star Fireflies expected to survive smog PETALING JAYA: The fireflies of Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor, will survive the haze as they have weathered similar situations in the past, entomologist Dr Laurence Kirton said. “This isn't the first time the fireflies sanctuary in Kuala Selangor is experiencing the haze,” said Dr Kirton, adding that the insects had survived in the past. However, he was not sure how the current haze would impact their life expectancy rate. “We have suspended our research visits after the air quality there reached dangerous levels,” said Dr Kirton, who is involved in an ongoing study of the fireflies. Previous studies show that the firefly population has been declining in the last 15 years.
