Fireflies expected to survive smog

PETALING JAYA: The fireflies of Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor, will

survive the haze as they have weathered similar situations in the past,

entomologist Dr Laurence Kirton said.

“This isn't the first time the fireflies sanctuary in Kuala Selangor is

experiencing the haze,” said Dr Kirton, adding that the insects had survived

in the past.

However, he was not sure how the current haze would impact their life

expectancy rate.

“We have suspended our research visits after the air quality there reached

dangerous levels,” said Dr Kirton, who is involved in an ongoing study of

the fireflies.

Previous studies show that the firefly population has been declining in the

last 15 years.

Apart from the fireflies’ natural enemies, development, pollution and

non-sustainable practices were reported to be among the main causes for the

slide.
