Baby orang-utan rescued

Roy Goh

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3:

--

A rescued baby orang-utan is now in the care of experts at the Sepilok

Orang-utan Sanctuary in Sandakan.

The primate, named " Reto Junior " , was first spotted on Monday by a farmer

who heard its cries at the edge of a forest in Telupid. Thinking that its

mother might be in the vicinity, he left it alone.

The farmer went to check on it the following day and saw it at the same

spot, not far from his orchard, about 160km from here.

He then called the Wildlife Department to seek advice and was referred to

veterinarian Dr Rosa Sipangkui.

" Infant orang-utans would rarely be abandoned by the mothers, " she said.

" In this case, something may have happened to the mother. "

The farmer took the orang-utan back to his house and handed it to Dr Rosa

early this morning. A check at the Sabah Zoological Park in Lok Kawi by Dr

Rosa and senior veterinarian Dr Sen Nathan showed that it was healthy.

Dr Rosa left by road this morning for Sepilok, about 280km away, where she

was scheduled to lead a team transporting two adult orang-utans to the

sanctuary’s forest reserve to be released.

The two orang-utans, Tiger and Guri, had been kept at the Shangri La Rasa

Ria Resort Wildlife Sanctuary in Tuaran, where they went through a

rehabilitation programme.

Reto Junior will be quarantined for several months at Sepilok before

undergoing rehabilitation.

At present, there are about 250 orang-utans at the sanctuary reserve.
