Guest guest
Last Update: Thursday, July 28, 2005. 11:20am (AEST) AUSRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION Appeal sees zoo-bound elephants remain in Thailand Eight elephants that have been approved for importation to zoos in Sydney and Melbourne will stay in Thailand until September, when an appeal against the proposal is due to be heard. Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell announced last week that he would allow Sydney's Taronga Zoo and the Melbourne Zoo to import eight elephants from Thailand. A coalition of animal welfare groups is asking the Administrative Appeals Tribunal to overturn the decision, arguing that there is no conservation benefit in bringing the endangered animals to Australia. In a directions hearing today the tribunal has set aside one week in September to hear the appeal and Justice Downes said he would try to deliver his final decision within days or weeks of the appeal hearing. The elephants will stay in Thailand until the final day of the hearing, when another decision on their short-term future will be made.
