Guest guest
FINANCIAL EXPRESSMetro / Country Inbreeding cuts short longevity of Dhaka Zoo animals 7/25/2005 The longevity of the animals in Dhaka Zoo is shortening due to inbreeding. The same reason is responsible for various complications developed in bodies of tigers, lions, deers, rhinos, hedgehogs and hippopotamuses, reports BDNEWS. Zoo authorities said, as animal exchange has not taken place between Dhaka and other zoos for many years, these complications have stemmed. Inbreeding has also led to diseases among the animals. Already, a lion has been crippled. The backbone of a tiger has curved. A hippo ceased to grow naturally. Recently born hedgehogs are also showing the same signs. Last year, a rhino died of physical complications. Veterinarian of the zoo Selim Iqbal told the news agency, inbreeding has caused hormone-related problem lethealgene. It hampers physical and mental growth of the animals. He said sometimes an animal dies without showing any signs of any disease. Iqbal said that the problem could be avoided by animal exchanges between Dhaka and other zoos. Curator of Dhaka Zoo said, they have already taken the initiative to exchange animals with the zoos of India and Nepal. He said that the expenses for air transportation is the main obstacle in exchanging animals. The government has been informed of the matter, the curator said.
